Stabilizer is nothing but a surface tightener specified by engineer or construction specialist that is used to hold the loose soil particles together in order to provide ultimate strength to the construction surface. The pressure achieved falls under the range of 50 to 200 psi. Stabilization basically refers to decreasing the plasticity index of the soil. Increase in plasticity index by 25% or more reduces the quality of the surface. The surfactant is able to reduce this index by 95% thereby increasing the age of the soil.

2. Mechanical and Chemical Stabilization by Adding Material: Adding material leads to the stabilization of the soil. This principle is used for increasing the strength of the soil which in turn enables the builders to use the site for construction and development. Mechanical stabilization refers to mixing the other soil materials to the existing soil for achieving desired strength while chemical stabilization is the addition of cementing materials or polar binding materials to the soil pores to increase the permeability and elasticity of the soil. Foundry sand and coal fly ash are the two most used materials that are employed in the chemical stabilization of the soil surface.

The type of soil determines the suitability of the material used for soil stabilization. Unlike other soil types, clay soils are best stabilized with the help of sufonated oils that are basically water-soluble in nature. The soil stabilization is the back bone of construction industry.
