Nails are sharp, pin shaped objects made up of very hard metal or sometimes alloy. They are used as fastener. The nails seen today are purely made up of steel or coated or dipped in order to prevent from corrosion in bad conditions or for improving adhesions. For woods, ordinary nails are usually used and are made up of low carbon, soft and mild steel. Nails for solid are very harder as they have more percentage of carbon in them.

Nails are being used from 3000 years. Earlier it was made by metal forging and hammering of the heads. The work of nail is to hold together materials by friction mostly in axial direction with laterally shear strength. After clinched and preventing it from falling out; the nails are sometimes seen bent. They are made up of a huge variety for different specialized purposes. Most commonly seen nail is the wire nail while other types include spikes, tacks, brads and pins.

The nail sizes if you have ever noticed carefully are referred to 10d, 16d and the same sequence continues. The d- suffix and the number are known as penny system because English penny was earlier referred to as ā€œdā€ which represented the initial letter of roman coin called, denarius.
At present penny system refers to the length of the nail though it does not clearly define the relationship to its length.

 
The different types of nails are:

 
1. Cut Nails- These nails are sheared or cut from the steel plate can also be hardened. They are used for attaching wood to the concrete block, brick or mortar joints
2. Common nails- They are widely used and are made up of iron wire
3. Box nail- These are wire based nails quite similar to the common nails. They are used on very thinner wood like wooden boxes for reducing splitting
4. Nails with duplex head- They are specialty nails very useful in temporary construction like form work, etc.
5. Annular and concrete nails
6. Brad and casing nails
7. Clout or Roofing nails
